Accidents are usually the result of a combination of factors with no one thing being the sole cause or 'blame' This man was just doing his job to the best of his ability on the day and has been hounded and pilloried for 30 years for his mistakes and his life subsequently destroyed. Accidents like this will always occur despite everyone's best intentions. A very emotive subject Davo.....The tragic incident occurred due to a number of failings on many different levels.....This was concluded at the first inquest....What was an empowering force for the bereaved families was the subsequent cover up of deceit and lies perpetrated by the hierarchy of the South Yorkshire police force. This deflected from the system and people responsible for the shortcomings of that day. Sheffield Wednesday FA itself and the safety measures in place ( Or not ) The lack of a current safety certificate, the lack of turnstiles of entry. These factors combined with the last minute ( Three weeks ) appointment of a new police chief in charge of the match day, whose woeful inexperience was to be exposed with terrible consequences. The number of tragic incidents ranging from one-offs like the Abervan disaster to the Grenfell tower block fire to a number of NHS hospital failings where thousands of people lost their lives to even yesterdays attack on the public on Tower Bridge....The official public bodies responsible for these failings will ALWAYS seek to deflect the blame from themselves. sad but true! |

| On a lighter note, the weather is still glorious during daylight hours and I am in shorts everyday painting the outside of the house. I started with an area under the porch and its escalating from there....At a couple of hours a day, should take me until February to finish, just need to find a bloody big ladder...I think one of my neighbors may have one..... |

| painting a house is good for the soul! - our little town caught alight yesterday but was well contained - I suspect foul play - everyone here is extremely fire conscious but a high proportion of fires around oz are deliberately started!
still in the 40's today - want some? beware beast - elderly gents on ladders don't mix! |

I'd say the top copper was at fault - didn't he give the command "open the gates"??? |

No-one was 'at fault' mate.....it was just circumstances....there were certainly mistakes made by the police but that was against a background of well-recorded long-standing bad behaviour by the Liverpool fans in away matches which had gained them severe notoriety when hyped-up by the gutter press of the day. |

| It seems that there are some who want to pin the blame on one person and one person only, whereas there were others involved in the mayhem and subsequent deaths. For the barriers to collapse there must have been unimanginable force ; body force ; mass body force being put on those barriers. I have been to football matches myself where there is well-behaved actions ; calm actions taken by fans. In matches in oz I understand that full strength beer cannot be sold on site etc etc. So in this sense I see Mals view that no one person can be accused of manslaughter. the rushing fans are expected to act with some care and attention to others. Yes I can see that duckenfield was inexperienced and may have certainly made faulty decisions but I also think in a way he has served his own sentence over the years?
but heh put Mal, me the beast, jenkay; mart [have I missed anyone] on a jury would we come up with yet another final conclusion? |

One person only cannot be demonized surely? |

| Good morning - No frost here this morning. It's supermarket shopping day today. It's bound to be busier than usual because of Christmas shoppers. We will be part of the throng too, so I can't really grumble about it.
Got to get extra food in for the family who will be staying with us for a number of days. I'm going to ask them to contribute a bit of time and money into the organising of things this year.
I'll probably be helping our neighbours set up their new computer this afternoon.
Have the best possible day. :) |

| Good morning - A bit cold and foggy for cycling but that's what I'll be doing shortly. I have to get to my friend's house and then we'll be driving to the starting point for this morning's U3A walk. That will be about 3 -4 miles done at a leisurely pace. Then back to his place and a cycle ride home.
All that has to be done this afternoon is a ride along to the doctor's to pick up the prescriptions.
Have the best possible day. :) |
