Andsome – who joined in 2014 conscripted me from The Windows forum in 2016.
 
I then attracted Irene, catgate, D4\/!d, pops, Dizzy and Gandalph in 2016 who were very active knocking out a collective 16.000 posts in a year, but all stopped posting in 2017 when andsome was banned and sags (the pig) was given the boot.
This was the result of a very disruptive and aggressive “lady” member (who Malcom sided with) spending a couple of months attacking other members– sags (The pig) especially – on the open forum. Andsome posted a thread complaining about her disruptive behaviour and Malcolm banned him.  I was a moderator at the time and was not given prior notice of Malcolms action so resigned from being a mod. I didn’t post again until recently when Davo prodded me.
 
I note that all the offending posts have been deleted from the forum.
 
Upon my return, I recruited vovojack in 2021 who, after making 350 posts, dropped off the radar because of few responses to his posts.
 
Moving on, until very recently, at the foot of the forum home page, there was a button named “Statistics”. Members could click on it and an automatically generated full page of forum statistics was presented showing such things as the number of posts each year and month, a league table of the number of posts by the top 10 posters and all sorts of other informative stuff. This illustrated the rapid loss of members after the 2017 spat and its continued decline. This button appears to have been removed very recently by someone with admin privileges for some unknown reason.

well thanks for being so frank Alan ; I concur. This site always had the potential to be a good little buzzer but self-imploded. I now feel like one of those small lads on bonfire night watching the dying embers of the fire we had built and nurtured and then watched get smaller and smaller. Whether Malcolm returns or not I doubt whether there is much future ahead? the strength and growth of forums imo depend on number of members and frequency of their postings - not selfish alliances

There is yet another possibility among others and that is that Malcolm just doesn't want to return anyway - which if is the case leaves us rudderless anyway?

personally and for what it is worth I don't think there is anything wrong with the site - it is well structured and open to various designs etc. some of us has seen it busy with lots of members - theoretically this could happen again but it does need an influx of new members and it does seem that the larger sites like OFF ; fPf ; buzz etc are more well established with large member numbers but I have seen them also faulty at times, so it is a fickle business and with the right advertising and enticements this site could be up and running again quite easily. It's not so much the design that is a problem but the age variables of members - too old versus too young etc - some of the biggest sites out which I haven't mentioned to me are rather boring - so the small site does have appeal - new members need bringing in again that's all.

Davo - a noble effort on your part - but you are whistling in the wind. I guess that those under say 55 years old will by now be using social media as their main source of information and communication with others. The forums that flourish are now generally confined to those that concentrate on a particular technology, hobby, interest, skill etc.  Even those specialist sites are struggling.

For example I am a mod of a large international Hyundai car forum where people can get help with motoring problems, share auto information, spread motoring news etc.  It also has sections for general information, humour, travel etc. and over the years has become a rich source of information and advice.  We attract an average of 12 new member per day many of which simply use the forum to get information before making a purchase or get help on a technical or commercial problem. Some we never see again after their immediate need is resolved, but a small percentage stay and become active members.  

However, as each year goes by we find that You Tube, Facebook and other social media sites are diluting our need.  Say you need instructions on how to change a clutch in a particular model  - You Tube are very likely to have videos showing how to do it.  Google has become the first resort for information and social media a common vehicle for general chat - and not a specialist forum where your lack of basic writing skills and spelling ignorance would be advertised. It doesn't matter on Facebook - you are with the like minded people there

Hence forums like Murgs are not likely to attract the young or middle aged who are now wedded to main-stream social media and have no interest in mixing with old fogies who are serving out their remaining time in God's waiting room. Murgs lacks a core need and no matter how worthy - is a dying breed.

I am one of the dinosaurs and participate in a few forums which serve my technical interests. I don't use Facebook or other social media sites, I prefer to communicate with remote friends and family via Email and even hand write letters for heaven's sake. 

I am an old, died in the wool, conservative, homophobic, atheist who is totally unfit to share the values - or lack of them - of the woke, gender fluid, history hating, disrespectful, uncaring, selfish and lazy that are now taking over our society. 

Rant over - I'll get my coat.

you haven't been eating your oats again have you and probably need more prune juice!! we can all live in hope - Bob did!!  but I must admit I do agree with you - when this celeste sinks I'll share my rubber boat with you! and anyone else who can get in it too!!
