What was it about Europeans over the previous centuries? Not only the English but other European countries felt it was quite all right to sail to distant non-European lands, plant the flag and say OK, this our land now.

I think they called it excitement and exploration and let's teach the savages how to be like us and learn the work ethic along the way AND they don't know how to develop their own lands properly anyway!!
