I live near to Guildford and agree that it's a nice place but not very wheelchair friendly. The slope of the High Street is very wearing.

It's a shame pops that councils are not more savvy when it comes to our wheelchair bound friends. Making it more tiring for the likes of yourself.  blowkiss

Mrs Mart was born and raised in Guildford. She likes to visit her home town/city sometimes, so if the weather forecast is good, we travel there by train for a day out and eat lunch in the sunshine where the bowling green is (see the seats in the second photo from the bottom). A pleasant way to spend a sunny day.

She is in a wheelchair but these days, has a fairly compact but sturdy powered one (Invacare Spectra XTR2) and so the hills are OK. Before that they took a bit of managing though.

A good idea but a big solar panel above the head might restrict manoeuvrability inside shops. :)

I communicate with an old friend who I once worked with in HK - oh happy days! - his wife died a few years back of alkzheimers and he now lives alone in Clapham - I always enjoy his descriptions of the weather forecast which he has carefully reproduced from the met reports; here is a recent one:

The mercury is forecast to hit highs of 19C on Saturday and Sunday before shooting up to 22C on Monday, the Met Office has said. However, Hurricane Ophelia is set to batter the UK after sweeping in from the Atlantic later next week. Forecasters have warned of heavy rain and gusts of up to 80mph while issued severe weather alerts have been issued, warning of potential power cuts, damage to buildings and disruption to transport and mobile phone signal.  Oh the joy of being an island, our weather is never boring.

Nice photos Mart. It's always interesting to see parts of an older world than us. There are some advantages in being the newest country in the world but our history is short.

No Maori arrived about 1000 years ago but Britain was covered in Celts and Saxons and Picts etc then. Nobody lived here until about then.

What was it about Europeans over the previous centuries? Not only the English but other European countries felt it was quite all right to sail to distant non-European lands, plant the flag and say OK, this our land now.
