It looks very much like one of those plastic garden ornaments they sell in Garden Centres

There's no better place to look for these creatures.
This one is a "pup. They grow to about 4 feet in "body" length as adults and are capable of gnawing holes in canal barge bases in as little as a fortnight.
In some areas of the country they are eaten with glee. Although since the end of January 1986 glee has been classed as an unhealthy contaminent.

reminds me of the capybaras found in the florida glades - they love cooking them and eating them of course!

It is indeed a capybara.  There were quite a few in the canal that our cruise ship moored in for the night in Strasbourg. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] They invaded the Norfolk broads for a time but the environment agency now claim to have eradicated them.

It wasn't there when our cruise ship stopped in Strasbourg last year. There were rats though.
