Buying smoke alarms is a complete waste of money in England. A lot of people are unaware that if you open Google, and type "Free smoke alarms in" followed by your county or area, you will be offered a free phone number. They will offer you a free fire inspection and free smoke alarms with a ten year battery life. Why pay? The attending fireman or official will remove the ones that you have and replace them with the free ones. One of ours failed at 1 AM a couple of days ago. I phoned the number hoping to leave a message on an answerphone, only to find that a young lady was on duty. She sent someone out to replace the faulty one. What more can you ask?

That sounds a good deal andsome. I have a couple in the house , in strategic places. Though I admit I forget to test them regular. I used to stand on a chair and puff my ciggie smoke in to check they were still working.
Do you have one of those carbon monoxide monitors too?

I do have a carbon monoxide detector, but the fire brigade do NOT provide those for you.

Just because something is free you're not obligated to claim one - all of these `freebies` come out of government coffers so unless you're really cash-strapped, eight or so quid for a smoke alarm is no big deal especially where your life is concerned.

The point is that the fire brigade have men occasionally in supermarkets offering a fire safety inspection of the house, and fit the fire alarms as part of the inspection. It is much cheaper and less dangerous for them to do this, than attend a fire with potential loss of civilian lives and fireman's lives.
