Vets Charges...

Why do vets charge so much and area's you live in make a difference too.
I was once told the area in which i live is one of the most expensive.
My poor daughter is so upset at the moment as one of her rescue dogs suddenly on thursday 
could not stand on his back legs or even sit properly,he suffers from fits and is on medication for it.
The vet was changing his medicine and he had one new tablet only when this happened.
He said it was a reaction to the drug  to feel wobbly
But things got worse yesterday and he was making a funny noise as well.
They saw an emergency vet but they could give him nothing else.
They returned to there own vet and he sent them to a special animal hospital , about an hours journey.
They first scaned his back and found a very bad disc and others that were not right either.
It must have finally gone when he had the fit, this is what the specialist said.
Luckily the dog has insurance but they don't know the amount yet it will cost.
He had the operation last night, but they don't want any visitors yet as he has to be kept as still as possible.
We don't know how long he will be there, my daughter is in bits .
This may cost a few thousand...very worrying.

Vets charge what you would be charged if we didn't have an NHS albeit scaled down a bit I expect. One of my cats has just had an amputation and the bill came to over £500!!!!

We will soon be getting our new Lowchen girl puppy spayed . It's going to cost $200.

Oh meerkat , I hope your daughter's furry friend gets well soon.
Aside from the money it's heart breaking when animals are hurt or ill. Fingers crossed he feels more comfortable now and will soon be back home where he belongs.

As to the money side. I have no pets but from what I hear vet bills can be horrendous if you have no insurance.
I remember many years ago when my sisters cheeky little cat got run over and suffered a broken jaw, along with other minor injuries. She had no insurance. She had no money. The PDSA were wonderful then and wired his jaw up and splinted his leg.

My Daughters dog Eddie was a rescue dog, they did not know he was having fits, he was at the dogs home for only a few weeks.
He would have a fit about every six months or so, but now it is a bit more.
The animal hospital ring her every morning to tell of his progress.
Today he ate a little chicken which he loves and they are giving him a gentle massage.
I don't know when she will be aloud to see him yet.

They only keep them so long Malcolm then they rehome them.

Vets know that you love your pet so much, that you will pay anything. 
I had to take my Labrador to the vets recently for an ear infection. I was charged £74. When l got home, my daughter said, didn't the vet notice her dew claw was broken? (I hadn't) It occurred to me that this particular vet hadn't given my dog a thorough check over,  as the other vets normally do as part of the consultation. I rang the vets and asked to speak to the vet that owned the practice. I explained that my dog had not been thoroughly checked over and if she had, her dew claw would have been noticed. I said, I was told to bring her back next week for her ear to be checked and l was worried that if l mentioned her dew claw, I would have to pay another consultation fee. He was really good and said, they would check her over, deal with the dew claw and there would be no charge. I would only need to pay for any medication prescribed.

My daughters dog has now come out of the animal hospital after his spine operation last week.
She has to do phisio on him each day and he has to be in a cage for another month yet till he gets stronger and can walk properly.
He can come out five times a day,for five minutes at a time to spend a penny etc.
It takes time for the spine to heal.
The charge was about, £5000 pounds, luckily he is insured.

Only just seen this thread through scouting round, I don't think threads show  a new post unless you have already contributed to the thread.  Hope all goes well for the dog.  I bet the insurance will rocket when due for renewal.

I know another forum lady whose dog injured his spine and had to be confined to a cage for a time to restrict his activity.
The little chap spent a lot of time resting and snoozing and so didn't mind it (until he became his usual sparky self)... and pleased to say he recuperated well and is now back to his normal self. I think she felt a bit bad  .. with the cage .. but it had to be done.
