It's about 50,000 years really Andsome but I'm only being piccy!  :;smile:
Maori arrived here about a thousand years ago having sailed from East Asia while the American indians walked over the Bering strait when it was the ice age and the water was tied up in ice.

"Freedom in Australia" and people seem to focus mainly on the 2.4% who are indigenous.

But OK, it's easy to be an armchair critic from the other side of the globe.
(Historically, most of the really evil stuff occurred at the hands of British settlers and their immediate progeny - but let's not go there).

In recent decades, successive Australian governments have bent over backwards to address issues of disadvantage.
Bucket-loads of money, many billions, have been poured into projects aimed at improving their lot.
Way out of proportion to their number - providing services and subsidies available to no other Australians.
And with some success. There are more and more aborigines in state or federal parliaments, in medicine, in law, in business, in trades etc etc.

But for those who choose to remain in remote communities there are complex problems and no simple solutions.
Generational welfare dependency when families live where there are no jobs,
alcoholism, domestic violence, drugs, parents who will not send their kids to school, sexual abuse, petty (and not so petty) crime.
Sure the % in jails is way out of proportion. But what can the courts do ?
Let the wife-basher or child-abuser or dope-peddler just carry on regardless ?

Things are improving - but if some Pom thinks they can solve it all overnight, feel free to come out and have a go.
