I also have whole rolled oats when I have porridge.  Half a cup of oats and one cup of milk with 1 desert spoon of granular sweetener just brought to the boil. I don't like it cooked any more because it softens the oats too much.

Mt favourite brand of oats, Jordans, seems to have vanished from the local supermarkets, so I have to make do with Scotts or Quaker.

I use a sucrolase based sweetener from Aldi rather than saccharin or aspartame.

A nice mug of tea ( 400 ml) with a couple of slices of toasted brown bread with a nice thick covering of Thick Cut Orange Marmalade. Yummy!

Whereabouts were you working in the south of France 'Pops'? I lived and worked around the cote d'azur for a few years late 70's early 80's.

I was chief chemist at a company in Grasse - just inland from the Côte d'Azur.

I was there 1985 -1990 (ish).
I left France for a wander about in 1983.....I worked in the tourist industry and escorted many a coach full of tourists to Grasse over a few years. Small world it really is!

Snap - so do I.

Though I'm sometimes unfaithful and get a similar one from Lidl.

Snap again...so do I
I am type2 diabetic and try hard to keep my blood sugar as low as I can with diet and three different daily pills, but alas I am slowly losing the battle I fear.

I'm lucky - no pills for type 2 diabetes. Just careful diet, exercise, weight watching and lots of full bodied red wine.

In 2002 I insisted on having a PSA test because a close friend had been diagnosed with prostate cancer - even though he had no symptoms - a bit too late.

The doctor organised a full round of blood tests and he told me the good news was my kidneys, liver, PSA etc were all fine - but the bad news was my blood sugar was 11.1 which meant I was diabetic. The threshold is 11.00.

So I dropped my chocolate and cake habit and tweaked my diet. The result has been my blood sugar dropped to 7.1 within 12 months and has never been above 5.7 for the past 5 years. The doctor admits that anyone walking into his surgery for the first time with blood sugar of 5.7 is not diabetic. However - once you have the badge of diabetes, you cannot drop it, and my travel insurance has to include it as one of my ailments.

I weaned myself away from added sweetness many years ago. I don't take any added sugar or artificial sweetener at all.

It might not be easy initially to do without but now I find things with sugar sprinkles (cereals etc, icing or in tea quite nauseating).

I'm perfectly OK with things that should be sweet - fruit and such or tiny amounts of sugar to take away the "acid edge" of sour things but never so much as to give a discernable sweet taste.
