Read Only Empty
PostSubject: Read Only   Read Only EmptyThu Oct 26, 2017 4:26 pm

My documents have suddenly reverted to 'read only' files and I cannot now create or edit my Word files !!
I have done everything I can to remove the read only attributes to my files and folders but no luck.
I have opened the properties tab for the files and unchecked the read-only box at all levels but this has no effect
There used to be a roll-back feature where you could roll back your machines settings to an earlier date but this feature seems to have gone.....any ideas anyone ? .....Mart ?

I've never had that problem to know how to solve it but I wonder it this happens to any new document created ..or is it just previously created ones? If new documents are OK, a workaround might be to copy the contents of the document you want to edit into a new document.

Are we talking Microsoft Word? If so, I also wonder if 'Protected View' is the reason for the problem. If so, have a read of this:

Old Word files now are uneditable (read only) and will not save.
Newly created files will not save !

can I not now go back a few days using the 'restore' feature Mart ?

The text in the original document won't copy into a new one?

It might be a setting somewhere but it won't hurt to try using a System Restore point to get back to normal. Just have to think again if that doesn't work.

Alan Hopkinson very kindly emailed me with a solution that he had tried and it worked fine for him, he was experiencing problems too....unfortunately it didn't work for me.
I however discovered a workaround, I moved the folder containing the Word documents from my 'Documents' folder and placed it on the 'Desktop' and hey presto it worked..... it's not ideal but it'll have to do for now.
Thanks for your input Mart yes

I'd just like to know just what happened, I am completely innocent and have never made any changes, it has to be an outside source, probably the last Windows update.
I am tempted to do a System Restore but I'm scared that I may make matters worse !
