| Speeding has been shown to be a major cause of accidents. The problem is that many signs are obscured. Where speed limits apply other than the usual 30 mph, repeater signs should be shown at regular intervals, this fact is sometime neglected by the local authorities. Where there are no signs but there are street lights, there is an automatic 30 limit. ----------------------------------------- Gustav Mahler is the finest composer who ever lived. |

I agree with appalling signage though. :;smile: |

| I'd say that obscured speed limit signs should be grounds for appeal as regards a speeding fine. It is sometimes difficult to know what a speed limit is on some stretches of road. Especially if, at the time of passing the sign, a driver was paying more attention to the traffic than they were to obscured and grimy signs.
Signs need to be kept clean and painted with the greenery around them trimmed back so that they are a bit more obvious or 'in your face'. |

| If someone successfully appeals a fine because of obscured signs, then the council should be fined. ----------------------------------------- Gustav Mahler is the finest composer who ever lived. |

| It's the Council that benefits from the fines andsome. They get a large chunk. |

| There is a village near me named Acocks Green which is a ribbon development along the main A41 road. They have recently introduced a speed limit of 20 mph along the shopping section of the road which is made obvious by repeater signs on posts and being painted on the road every 50 yards.
Even the buses are ignoring it by my observations. ----------------------------------------- This post may contain controversial personal opinion, humour, ironic comment or sarcasm. | The lane in which I live has 20mph signs, one right outside my house, 100 yards further on from the 60mph limit sign. No-one takes any notice of the 20mph limit and everyone speeds up and down the lane at 40mph plus !......even the police cars !! |

| When I was working and had about 14 houses a day to visit, I had to get a move on if everyone on my list was going to watch TV that night. I don't need to get places fast these days though and if I speed, it will be by mistake rather than intent. I just hope I don't get nabbed during those moments that I might unintentionally gone a few MPH over the speed limit. |

| It is easy to do in a modern car. The last couple of times I was caught were NON intentional. The last time cost me £80 and I had ro attend a speed awareness course,if I wanted to avoid points on my licence. It was very educational and quite enjoyable. I am now extra careful,or at least I was until the specialist stopped me driving for twelve months to see if the prescribed medication put a stop to mini seizures. ----------------------------------------- Gustav Mahler is the finest composer who ever lived. |

Even the buses are ignoring it by my observations. 20 mph limits are ridiculous in most cases, complete waste of time. Didn't British Leyland have a plant at Acocks Green in the 60's? |
